EMERGENCY CENTER EXPANSION LARGEST IN HOSPITAL HISTORY

On May 11, 2005, members of the Scotland Health Care System and Foundation Boards of Trustees and Medical Staff, local dignitaries, and representatives of the project contractor and architect, broke ground to begin Phase I of the multi-million dollar Emergency Center expansion.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Charles Jenkins, Chairman of the Scotland Health Care System Board of Trustees, commented on this much-needed project. "In any community, a hospital's Emergency Center is its most important health care asset. When you or a loved one has an emergency medical or surgical need, you want to know that you can quickly receive the care you need and that the people caring for you, care about you. At Scotland Health Care System, we realize this, and nothing is more important to us than making sure we deliver on this commitment to our community."

Each year nearly 23,000 patients receive care in our Emergency Center (which is nearly 1 of every 2 patients in our service area) in space designed for 10,000. "Nearly 20% of these patients are admitted and in total, nearly two thirds of our inpatient admissions come thru our Emergency Center," continued Jenkins. "Of these 23,000 patients, nearly 20% are uninsured and another 25% have Medicaid. We are our community's safety net for necessary health care and we are proud to be it. It is why we exist!"

When complete at the end of 2006, 21 private rooms will replace 13 curtained bays, two triage rooms will help get patients to a bed sooner, and two trauma rooms will be available for the unfortunate times when they are needed. A patient consultation room will be available when staff and families need private space (which does not now exist), as well as a new design with information technology to allow our staff to focus their best efforts on caring for our patients.

Jenkins also stated, "During this construction project, I want to pledge our commitment to keep providing you the service and care you deserve and expect. Though the project will create challenges, Dr. Nederostek and his team will ensure that we will not lose focus of caring for our patients. I also want to remind you that we are in the process of finishing renovation work to create additional inpatient bed space so that our growing numbers of emergency patients have room to go to upstairs when necessary."

Hewitt Fulton, Chairman of the Scotland Memorial Foundation announced that the Board of Trustees is embarking on the most comprehensive capital campaign since the Foundation was formed in the late 1980s. For the past several months the Foundation board has been in the silent phase of the campaign, a time to recruit leaders and to ask the hospital "family" to support this project. Today, the Foundation announces their campaign to the community and seeks their support to raise $1.5 million for this expansion project. "This campaign will support a project that will change the face of health care in this community for a long time. This campaign is about meeting a community need – ensuring that our friends, families, neighbors and even people we don’t know – can come to the Emergency Center at Scotland Memorial Hospital and be treated in an environment where they receive quality, compassionate emergency care. As we move forward with all phases of this campaign, we will be guided by the philosophy that the expansion of the Emergency Center is addressing the health care needs of the people of this community; it is not about the hospital. We will invite many, many people and organizations to support this project because it is a project that will serve the citizens of our area for years to come."

In June, Peterson and Associates, the project's contractor, closed the current Emergency Center parking lot and Emergency Center visitors now park at the front of the hospital and enter the hospital at the front of the hospital to the right of the main entrance. Construction has begun on the new facility which, when completed, will provide 24,000 square feet of Emergency Center space.

With a combination of additional space, privacy, and technology; and with much support from our community, our staff and our physicians - Scotland Health Care System is pleased and proud, once again to bring our community a major investment in its health care and to prove that our community is special!
